6. A little Heresy and Tea

Thought I'd share a little snippet from one of my classes today.

It happened in my afternoon class, which incidentally has been bumped up to a grand total of 4 students. Robert found this weird plastic strap type thing, and made it into a crown, and declared himself king, to which Terry replied (incidentally, in perfect English, which was itself pretty impressive), “Well, if you’re king, then I’m God.”

My eyebrows shot up, but that wasn’t the end of it. Robert countered with, “Well, if you’re God, then I’m Jesus!”

I almost gave myself whiplash, my head turned so fast. But it didn’t there. Terry countered with “Well, if you’re Jesus, then I’m Super Jesus!”

My hot tea almost came out of my nose.

Robert: “If you’re Super Jesus, then I’m Giant Super Jesus!”

Terry: “If you’re Giant Super Jesus, then I’m Ultra Giant Super Jesus!”

Robert: “Well, I’m Great Giant Super Jesus…”

Terry: “I’m Great Giant Super Jesus Ultra humongous….”

I think it was around here that they realized I was in hysterics and the entire class (all 4 of them) proceeded to lose it. It took me about 10 minutes to get everyone back on track again.

Hey, a little heresy never hurt anyone did it?

Oh, well… I don’t think this particular bit of heretical conversation will hurt anyone.

I realized I haven't blogged in a while and I apologize... but report card season is among us -- the school year here runs from March to March, so things are kind of in chaos right now. We have our kindergarten 'graduation ceremony' on Thursday which will be a relief, because I'm getting sick of practicing. If I have to hear "Shake My Sillies Out" by Raffi ever again after Thursday I think someone will suffer pain... although, my little kids look so cute when the "wiggle their waggles away". They remind me of little Caleb David... although they don't wiggle as impressively as him.

Anyway, the next school year starts on March 1st, and I'm still not entirely sure what class I will have. I know they will be called Elmo, but I don't know exactly who my students will be, which is kind of frustrating, but par for the course. I've been trying to get used to finding things out at the last minute. I actually have stopped bringing work home because it turned out to be pointless. Every time they told me something ahead of time and I prepared for it, the next day I would find out that they had changed their mind. For example, that class I was supposed to get, the one with the complaining parents? Well, I went in the Monday after I was told I would have that class, and was told "Oh, you'll start that tomorrow...", and I was told that everyday for a week... I did end up having that class, but only for the last week that it ran, which was kind of sad because they turned out to be a really fun class. Their English level was advanced enough that I could actually teach something other than basic vocabulary or grammar. We discussed geography, and astronauts... it was a nice change of pace. I'm hoping that in the next year I get at least one class of a higher level.

In other news, it's looking like I might have a neighbour soon. One of the other teachers (Suzanne) has been informed that she will be moving into my building, so that will be really cool. I know the apartment next to me has been empty for a few days, so I think she'll be there.

Oh, and I've got another cold. I don't know if it's the air quality or the kids, but it's beginning to drive me nuts. I had about 5 days of perfect health, but now I'm heading back downhill. What is really annoying me about this bout is that I'm coughing so much I can hardly sleep... and I have a huge headache because of it.

Anyway, I think that's it for updates for now. Sorry about the delay. Much love
